St. Rose of Lima Academy began with one woman’s determination to give children a chance to learn.
In 2008, we met Rosie, a local woman who had started a small pre-K program using the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Olkokola. More than 40 children attended classes in a former corrugated metal cattle shed that had been repurposed as a church. Although Rosie had never been formally trained as a teacher and was not paid for her work, she recognized the urgent need for young children to begin their education early — and she stepped forward to meet that need.

When Seeds of Hope Tanzania learned of the conditions in which these children were learning, we knew we had to help. In 2015, with the support of sponsors and partners, Seeds of Hope took over a half-built brick structure and began the work of turning it into a school.
This marked the beginning of a partnership rooted in faith, community, and the belief that education can change lives.

Through the extraordinary generosity of the students, families, and teachers of Eastport Elementary School, what began as a dream became a reality. Together, we helped raise a school — and with it, hope for an entire village.
Children who otherwise may never have had the opportunity to attend school now had a place to learn, grow, and thrive.

Today, St. Rose of Lima Academy serves children from the surrounding community and stands as a source of pride for the village. Many villagers describe the school as nothing short of a miracle.
Their hope is to continue adding classrooms each year until St. Rose becomes a full primary school, offering lasting educational opportunities for generations to come.

“If you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the poor, then your light will rise in the darkness…”
